Mark of the Unicorn's 828 FireWire Audio Interface
Audio for nonlinear-editing systems is often an afterthought. By the time you add the SCSI card, the graphics card and all the NLE system cards, you are out of slots and stuck with your NLE’s basic audio capabilities.Enter the MOTU 828 ($795), an audio interface from Mark of the Unicorn that can add 18 simultaneous high-quality audio inputs and outputs via the FireWire port on your computer. While the 828 has become a hit in the audio production world, I took the 828 for a spin to see if it could help add professional audio to different NLE systems. Overall, I was impressed: The MOTU 828 can add incredible audio production capabilities with a minimum of fuss.
Despite all the precautions you might take to prevent grounding problems, the AC signal from the wall can fluctuate due to circumstances beyond your control. These fluctuations include surges (temporary increases in the voltage) and spikes (momentary but huge increases in the voltage) from lightning and other sources. The voltage can also drop dramatically in a brownout or disappear altogether in a blackout.
