The Spike Treatment
Joe Bonamassa's album was in the can, but Pro Tools whiz Matt Chiaravalle was called for a new approach

As Chief Engineer of Spike Recording on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Matt Chiaravalle has overseen a wide range of projects in the studio’s five-year history, from well-known artists such as Warren Zevon and Anton Fig to a wide range of up-and-coming acts. But one he’s just finished for 24-year-old guitar phenom Joe Bonamassa ranks as one of the most interesting, and not just because of Bonamassa’s inspired playing.

Joe Meek's Bold Techniques
Chapter eight: Telstar, from Creative Music Production: Joe Meek's Bold Techniques

The first day of 1962 did not go well for the Beatles. When John Lennon told Dick Rowe at Decca Records that on behalf of himself and the band he hoped they’d passed the audition, he was no doubt disappointed to find that they had not. Legend has it that the group was turned down by nearly everyone in London, and another legend has it that Joe Meek was one of those who turned them down. Whether the story is true or not, trying to imagine what a Meek/Beatles collaboration would have sounded like is an enjoyable exercise. To begin with, Joe probably would have tried to change their name to something he considered more “commercial.”

Big Foote Music Scores USGA Tribute
Composer asked to pitch a score before the spot was filmed
Throughout the country, there are many golfers who don't pay dues, don't grab a shower in the locker room after the 18th, and don't lounge in the clubhouse. These are the people who play America's public golf courses and the USGA has arranged a tribute by hosting the US open at Bethpage Black, in Farmingdale, New York. The first public course to host such an event is featured in a :30 spot by BBDO/NY, directed by David Cornell of Headquarters, and scored by Big Foote Music.
