Transaction is expected to close in early January Pinnacle Systems, Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all of the stock of Steinberg Media Technologies AG, a Hamburg, Germany-based developer of digital audio software products, including Nuendo and Cubase. ![]() Extreme Isolation Headphones I review a lot of gear, and this new Swiss-made product stands out from the pack as one that delivers a no-compromise solution to a common problem in audio work: Keeping loud external sound out of the headphones — and keeping headphone sound from bleeding to mics.
![]() Sonic Foundry’s ACID Pro 4.0 What’s the most respected professional audio program? You could make a good case that the answer is Sonic Foundry’s ACID Pro. Used extensively in music, video and film production, ACID Pro has carved out a comfortable niche for itself as the most powerful music-looping program available on any platform. The latest version, ACID Pro 4.0 ($499), adds some important new features that could potentially expand its use among professionals working with multi-channel audio, software-based MIDI synthesizers and automated sound mixes. There are a few rough spots that have resulted from the program entering uncharted waters but, on the whole, this is a significant and well-implemented upgrade. ![]() Sonic Desktop Software’s SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 2.1 You work with video for a living. Odds are you’re not a musician—or at least not so much of a musician that you’re able to create your own soundtracks. So, what do you do? You have several choices. You could purchase pre-packaged music clips. They’re usually royalty-free, but you have the problem of making them fit the precise lengths of your video clips (unless you’re willing to edit your video to fit the soundtrack). You could use a looping program, such as Sound Forge’s ACID Pro 4.0. You’ll be able to spin out musical passages that precisely fit your video clips, but you’ll have to spend some time learning the program. Also, your musical needs may not be compatible with the types of repetitive music that are favored by the looping programs. |
