![]() Basie recordings on Genex DSD recorders draw crowd of engineers to Cello Studios Genex Audio showed off the capabilities of its Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio recorders Monday night at a listening session of 5.1 surround sound recordings of the Count Basie Orchestra made by engineer Mike Pappas. Fittingly, the event was held at Cello Studios' Studio 1 in Hollywood, a legendary room where Count Basie (among many others) recorded in the 1960s when the facility was called Western Recorders Studios. ![]() The True Story of Pulling off a Hire-wire Act with no Net and 25 Million People Watching With both the record industry and the networks uncertain about their futures, they rallied aroud the Grammys as a technological tour de force tantamount in significance to the music itself. This was no ordinary awards show: the 45th Grammy awards was the first time a major network awards show was broadcast in prime time using both high-definition video and high-resolution 5.1 surround audio. The effort proved worthwhile with viewers, leading the ratings for the night and showing gains over last year. According to Nielsen Media Research, the telecast earned a 14.7 rating/23 share, equal to 25 million U.S. viewers, versus the 2002 show, which scored 11.9/19, or 19 million viewers.
