Composer Jerry Gerber creates full symphonies with MIDI and sampled sounds
When you listen to music, you don't usually think about the composer's writing process. But the fact that Jerry Gerber's new CD of modern orchestral music, "The Art of MIDI Sequencing," was entirely created with samplers, synthesizers and sequencing makes the end result all the more impressive.

As studios strive to turn their library assets into new revenue, they’re faced with the issue of simultaneously preserving history and upgrading it for the current generation of high-end home theater buffs. Nowhere is the difficulty of properly reconciling these obligations better illustrated than in the field of surround sound mixing — take as an example the ongoing restoration of the entire James Bond series of cinema thrillers, which has turned into a cottage industry at Los Angeles digital audio post facility MiCasa Multimedia. When MiCasa CEO Bob Margouleff received the Bond masters from MGM Home Video, which was preparing a series of DVD special editions for release later this year, he found less than he had hoped for. “When the films came to us, all they had were mono dialog, music and effects stems,” he recalls. “It wasn’t what you would look for when you want to make a 5.1 surround-sound restoration of film audio.”

I was eating lunch the other day with one of our bright young editors, who was pecking away at his laptop between bites. Just making conversation, I asked what he was working on and, smiling proudly, he showed me his project; a short film in mid-edit. On a PowerBook, an Avid on a frickin’ laptop. Having just mortgaged my children’s futures on a couple of the full-blown versions of this machine, I swallowed my tuna and my pride and asked what his rig had set him back.
Adobe Systems Incorporated today announced an agreement to acquire the technology assets of Syntrillium Software, a leader in digital audio tools. Syntrillium's flagship product, Cool Edit Pro, will join the company's existing line of professional digital video products that include Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Encore DVD and Adobe Photoshop.
