This Isn’t Your Dad’s Music Library
House, Punk, Mariachi, Trip-Hop…Forget about Middle-of-the-Road

The level of expectation for music on television — from documentaries to station IDs to news coverage — has risen about as high as tickets to a Stones show. One reason is that these days new artists are broken on TV — a careful listener will hear everyone from Thievery Corporation to Nick Drake scoring commercials. Anyone producing viable music libraries in 2003 has to have a great ear hearing the message contemporary radio is sending, access to a range of composers, and an eye toward newly relevant technologies such as the 5.1 surround sound supported by HD. Enhancing the usability of library music is critical too, either by making it easier for users to customize cues or facilitating access through Web searching and download.

Design, Falafels and More
A day in the life of B1 Media's Creative Director Benjamin Zev

The alarm hits hard at the stroke of six, gotta love that gangsta rap. Wait a minute…6 A.M.? I don’t think so. As I reach for the snooze button, a visual list of the day flashes through my mind. It’ll start with a creative brainstorming session for a new project. Two other projects are on the fast track – the 2D and 3D animators are knee-deep in production. My Art Director is working up DVD menus for the Football project and there’s a live shoot I have to get to by two. If I’m lucky, I’ll make the audio mixing session. If I’m really lucky, we’ll complete the final compositing and get this last project out the door. As my hand releases the snooze button, it’s 6:01. I pass out again.
