Wattstax – The Special Edition Reheating Tracks for a 5.1 Remix of ‘The Black Woodstock’ Thirty years after it was first released, the acclaimed 1973 music documentary Wattstax is getting a new lease on life — and another chance to reveal the raw power of some legendary gospel, inspirational, blues, funk and soul artists and performers. Rereleased nationwide over this summer by Columbia Pictures as Wattstax — The Special Edition, the film features the never-before-seen restored original ending, which includes Isaac Hayes’ performances of “Theme From Shaft” and “Soulsville.” Cakewalk’s Project5 There’s a not-so-quiet revolution going on with soft synths (also known as virtual synthesizers). A $50 software program can now outperform the capabilities of a $2,000 musical synthesizer. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of these artificial instruments available—many for free. And you don’t need to be a musician or keyboard player to use them. A similar trend involves sequencing software. These programs let you cut and paste musical patterns. The computer can generate variations of pre-existing patterns for you, or—for truly original music—you can create your own patterns from scratch. Music production tool due in August Apple has announced that Soundtrack, the music production tool introduced as a feature in the new Final Cut Pro 4, will soon be available as a standalone application as well--next month, in fact--for $299. Soundtrack is a suite for for creating royalty-free music scores. It automatically matches audio loops regardless of tempo and key and offers real-time arranging and mixing. It will support Mac OS X. |
