Survival of the Loudest!
How Audio Supervisors Cope with the Dialog of Reality TV

Production audio personnel often find themselves in their own version of Survivor, a shoot where they must act as transparently as possible so as not to interfere with the progression of a mainly ad-libbed narrative, yet make sure that every word from dozens of subplots and back stories is there for producers to choose from. This is where audio has to be first-take and better than audible, because ADR is not an option — post production is a luxury that neither the budgets nor the premise of reality TV can afford.

Tierney Sutton has managed to pull off a very difficult task. Her collection of jazz recordings, featuring standards some might consider not an easy sell to modern audiences, has garnered the singer critical praise and a growing legion of fans. Sutton's upcoming CD, "Dancing in the Dark" is a tribute to Frank Sinatra recorded at Conway Studios in Hollywood for Telarc. Engineering tasks were handled by multiple Grammy award-winner Michael Bishop.
