But there is no other shoe, just continuing development and innovations with the applications, which include Vegas, Sound Forge and ACID, says Andrew Schneider, Senior VP/GM of Sony's Screenblast Business Unit.

Are we there yet? For years, that has been the central question regarding 5.1-channel audio. Sure, it’s coming, but when will it arrive? While we may never see 5.1 audio in every home, you can make a case that it’s well on its way to grabbing a substantial slice of the audio pie. Not convinced? Just look around you. Most DVDs of recent films have a Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround EX (6.1) or DTS-ES (6.1) soundtrack. HBO and Showtime offer HD-TV channels that transmit in Dolby Digital 5.1. Similar HD channels from Cinemax, The Movie Channel, STARZ! and Bravo are expected by year’s end. Two aspiring audio CD replacements—DVD-Audio and SACD—support 5.1 audio. And many computer games feature music and sound effects in 5.1 for enhanced game play.
