![]() Robert Margouleff on the state of audio surround sound Don’t get Robert Margouleff started on the subject of competing audio surround sound formats. Speaking on a panel entitled "The Future Of Surround" at the Surround Conference in Los Angeles Dec. 12, the pioneering producer/engineer/mixer warned in advance that if asked what he thought of the market battles being waged between formats such as DVD-A and SACD, he would probably start waving his arms and flip out. Undeterred, panel moderator Bobby Owskinski asked anyway. Someone recently asked me why every time they tried splicing two pieces of audio together they kept getting clicks in their audio. They also wanted to know how to eliminate the problem. Well, the reason this happens is because most of the time the two different audio waveforms don't line up with one another at the splice point. Waveforms should be spliced at a point where they both line up with the zero-axis (a point at which no sound is occurring).
